Passenger Injury and Spider Bites

Saturday, June 25th 2011, was an amazing day filled with a boat tour around Odaiba, a squash buckling lunch at a pirate themed restaurant, and a slice of disappointment at not being able to rent a puppy for an hour. Yes, I said rent a puppy for an hour, but if you were here without a feline or canine companion, you’d pay, and we would have if the shop where you rent the puppies wasn’t closed down.(sad day L ) To ease our troubled minds Amanda, Kohei, and I, gorged ourselves a “The Pirate King” restaurant, where we engaged in pirate talk for a few hours. It was a great day until we reached the platform for the Chou Line Rapid bound for Nakano station. On the screen in English our party found that the train we needed to catch was closed due to “Passenger Injury”. Normally, I would say to myself, “well, that’s inconvenient. Hope the passenger is alright.” But a few seconds later the train conductor explained the situation in fuller detail. Kohei translated and, said that someone had jumped. That’s when it hit me that June 25th 2011 was someone’s last day on earth, and  that that person chose June 25th to be their last day. When it all sank in, I felt like I had failed that person and God because if I had reached that person with the gospel, or if I had at least been able to explain to them that there is hope in this material and superficial world that we live in, then maybe that train would have been running on time that day. I am ashamed that the first words I thought were of inconvenience rather than of morning for the soul that could be damned for eternity.
BTW, I was bitten by a spider on Monday, June 20th, it hurt and was pusy and swollen for a couple of days, but God provided. I had planned on going to the clinic near my home this week if it didn’t get any better, but on Sunday, my pastor’s wife, who is a doctor, noticed that my arms and hands were cold. She asked if I had anemia, and I told her I wasn’t sure, so she offered to give me a blood test that day. So, I said that would be great and could she look at my spider bite, and she did! So she tested my blood, pumped some vitamin C into my system and then gave me some ointment for my spider bite, all for free!! Praise God!!!

Made it.

First off, i have never had a flight go so smooth, not even in the states. Yeah, the seats were cramped and it was a bit claustophobic, but the food was great and the company was even better. I met a very nice man named Bill who was on his way to see his girlfriend in Jakarta, so needless to say he had a very long flight ahead of him once he got to Tokyo. I also met another wonderful person named Marille. She is visiting her family in the Philippines before she starts her new job in Florida, she hasn't seen her family in 3 years. They both were really great company for the 12 hour flight. Once we got on the ground, I staggered toward customs and immigration and all of that went smoothly. So smoothly that I made it to the exit gate before Susan got to the airport. Next I exchanged my American money for some spiffy new yen and then we got on the train headed towards Nakano, Tokyo. All in all it was very exciting and fun trip thanks for all your prayers. Anywho, here's the deal, since it looks like I am going to be busy, I'll try to update twice a week one with commentary on how the journey is going and  the other with pictures or a video to illustrate it. Next time, I'll be writing about Seibo Nursing College!

Of What May Not Be but Hopefully Will Be

These days have been extremely hard because of my desire to be in Japan when my life is here at school. I have been planning and saving to go back to Japan ever since I got back in 2009. I miss my friends, my church family, and the culture deeply. But I miss God's progress there the most. His constant push and my constant need to pray is what guided most of my days there, so when I found out that I could go back again in December I immediately started concretely getting ready to serve again this summer. I got the word out about my trip and started raising support by word of mouth, I got my assignment from my mission agency, and started I handing out my prayer cards when Friday, March 11th came at 8am. It felt like the bottom of my world had been swept right from under me, and the shock and worry over friends consumed me as I struggled to get a hold of any information about my church family and friends not only in Japan but also in Hawaii. Thankfully all of my  friends there were alright but tens of thousands were left dead or missing and even more displaced without a home and common comforts. I am still grieving for these many losses even though I could never truly understand the loss and possible shame that the Japanese might be feeling right now, my only prayer is that God's glory and hope will be truly revealed during this time of great need.
The possibility of my making it to Narita Airport on June 1st, 2011 are still pretty good, but I have been making a backup plan just in case the worse should happen again. I believe in God's timing and in God's grace that all this happened for a reason. In addition, I know that out of this mess God' glory will be revealed whether I am there in Japan or not, and His progress is already very evident in the unity of the Japanese churches there. Please pray not just for the physical, monetary, and mental healing of this tragedy but a revelation of the hope that has always been.
